Episode 22 – The Rule Of 5

The Rule Of 5

Hello and welcome to the show!  Following on from previous episodes when I discussed deciding what your breakthrough goal is, we are now going to add to that by exercising “The Rule of 5.”

Pablo Picasso said: “I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.” This one is simple. The only way to learn is to do. Trying new things lights a fire inside you. … All these things help you learn and grow.”

In other words, you don’t know how to do them when you start, in the process of doing it, you learn how to do it.  You learn how to play the piano by taking lessons and practicing playing the piano.

So, you’ve got your breakthrough goal and now I want you to take the size of a business card and write your breakthrough goal on it.

When Jack Canfield and Victor Hansen wanted to sell copies of their book “Chicken Soup for the Soul” they both signed a business card stating “We are joyfully celebrating the sale of 8 million Chicken Soup for the Soul books in 2002!

The following year they sold around 13 million copies of the book.  They both received royalty cheques for over 6 million dollars each!

Now, of course, this success process is not effortless and you have to put a lot of time and effort and they did many things daily to ensure that this book was known to as many people and organisations as possible.

You first have to know your destination, they knew what they wanted to achieve with the success of their book.  It’s like when you go to the travel agent, what do they ask you? Where do you want to go? When do you want to go there? How long do you want to stay?

Think about it, if you can’t answer those questions, you can’t go anywhere, can you?!  The same thing is true here, you need to be clear on what your goal is.

So practice the rule of 5.  The rule of 5 says this;

“Do 5 things every day that will lead to the achievement of your breakthrough goal.”

So every single day, except your holy day if you have one, you are now going to take five specific action steps to achieve that goal. This is your breakthrough goal, this is the goal that is going to take you to the next level.

Now, there are many other goals that you are going to have in various parts of your life.  But this is one of the most important goals for you, and you really need to place a focus on it.

If we have ourselves all over the place, nothing breaks through, that’s why it’s important to have the power of focus.

Focussing on one thing. You want to break through to success, and focus your energy on the things that most important, what will happen is you will more results than you ever imagined.   So, you do 5 things every day that are working towards your breakthrough goal.

Let’s say your breakthrough goal is to lose 50 kilos.

You could cut carbs out of your diet.

You could drink 2 litres of water a day, which the research says cleanse the toxins out of your system.  One of the functions of fat is to take toxins out of the blood and keep them in little banker’s boxes until the liver can handle it.  If you were to fast regularly, it would help move some of that.

You could go for a walk after dinner, you could do some deep breathing which hyperventilates the body and gets the metabolism to go up.

You could exercise before breakfast which gets the metabolism set before you eat food.

You could read something every day that’s motivational about weight loss.

You could do some stress reduction techniques to keep the oxytocin levels down in your body and so forth. So there are lots of things you could do, and if you did five things a day, what’s going to happen? You’re going to lose weight!

So whatever it is, the five action steps a day method will get you on your way faster to your breakthrough goal.

When Jack and Mark were trying to create awareness for their book they did five action steps a day toward marketing and selling the book.  Five radio interviews, five television interviews, five newspaper interviews.

If they couldn’t get interviews they would send out five free books to decision-makers hoping somebody would promote the book.  It worked.

One of the books they sent to the producer of “Touched by an Angel” the US American fantasy drama which aired from 1994 to 2003.

She then had all of her staff read the book, it got out into the AP wire, the Variety and became a national news story because it was a leading show, she wanted people to have that feeling in the studio that the stories in the book created.

I know of a real estate company that has their Formula for Success and their rule is;

“Five – ten-fifteen -five”

So, what does that mean?

They say if you have five in-person meetings every day;

Make ten phone calls;

Send 15 handwritten thank you notes,

Then go and view five properties every day, you will be a top performer in their company.  Apparently, everyone who exercises this formula achieves amazing success.

Just like I’ve talked about before in previous episodes;  E + R = O and the combination to the lock, you might have the right numbers but if they’re in the wrong order, the lock won’t open.

So in summary,  they have five in-person meetings, ten phone call meetings, they send out handwritten thank you notes to thank them for the meeting, the opportunity, it creates a relationship.  And then go and view five properties that are available.

So every day at the end of the week, they’ve viewed 25 new properties so they’re familiar with all the listings in their real estate market.

This is the combination, in real estate.

Now depending on what your goal is you can create your own 5-10-15-5 rule that moves you towards your goal.

So if you do the rule of five your GPS will kick in and you’ll start to see all kinds of ways to achieve your breakthrough goal.

I hope that’s helped you understand “The Rule of 5” Formula for success.  Try it! I would love to hear some great stories from you about what you have achieved so far.

Thanks for listening I appreciate you being here and I hope you’re benefitting from this information and use it in your everyday life to improve, learn and get inspired to do more each day to get to where you want to be.

I’ll leave you with a quote from Best-Selling Author and Publisher, Robert Collier who once said;

“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.”

That’s it from me, and he’s to you doing five things a day to get you closer to your goal sooner!

Have a wonderful and successful week!
