Episode 13 – Taking The First Step
Hello and welcome to the show, thanks for being here. There’s a famous Chinese proverb that states “A journey of 1000 miles begins with one step”
And it is so true, sometimes success happens because you just lean into it. You just lean in to see how it feels or works, you don’t go all in, you just lean in. Be willing to be open to opportunities and do what needs to be done to pursue it further. No contracts, do it without a promise of success, without any expectation. Just start. Experience it, see what it feels like that way you will find out if you want to keep it going, instead of thinking about it, deliberating, contemplating and reflecting on what might happen. Be willing to start without seeing the whole path.
Martin Luther King Jr. said: Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase. Just take the first step.
So, you lean into it without knowing how everything will unfold. Often we have dreams that we don’t know how are going to manifest, we don’t know how we are going to achieve them, so we are afraid to commit to the work because the path is unclear and the outcome uncertain. But by leaning into it, it just requires you to start exploring to enter those unknown waters trusting that the port will appear.
So once you start, the journey will ultimately take you from where you are to where you want to be. Don’t spend too much time worrying about when the best time is to start, because there is never going to be that perfect time.
Now of course if you are into astrology and your want to contact your astrologer or spiritual healer about an auspicious date to start your online store, get married, publish your book or maybe begin a concert tour, that’s fine and I understand that, but for the most part, the best strategy is just to get in there and get started. Lean into it. Don’t wait for beautiful white doves to fly over your house in the shape of an astrology sign and think its a sign to begin. Just start.
If you want to create awareness about your brand and you are a business success consultant in your local community, you might want to start by offering a talk to local council workshops, local schools, church groups or BNI. There will be so many opportunities in your local area for you to just start. By just having that date set, it will begin to put a little pressure on you to start researching and preparing for that great speech.
Now the thing you want to do might be something that you don’t have sufficient skills for. An example of that might be you want to get into the restaurant business. You might want to start by getting a job in a restaurant or doing a small business course or even talk to some restaurant owners and ask them about the business, there may be some tips they can give you.
Don’t think that because you don’t know about something that you won’t reach your goal.
Think back when you were learning to ride a bike, you were so scared when your parents said that they were going to take the training wheels off, but with practice, you learned to ride your bike. Practice, practice, practice that’s how we learn.
I remember when I was taking my eldest daughter April out when she was learning to drive a car. She was so scared at the start, of course, we went out one night on a straight road, hardly any traffic, she’s quite happily driving when suddenly she saw a car in the distance coming towards us, now this car was about three kilometres away, quite a distance. She yells out mum, there’s a car coming towards us! So that’s the kind of thing you’re going to feel when you’re getting into a new area that you’re not familiar with. Moving forward to present time April now is a confident driver and is now teaching her eldest son to drive. She now drives while talking on the phone, BlueTooth of course, she’s trying to stop a fight in the backseat with the young ones. So it’s all a matter of progressing and learning and having those experiences to move you along your learning journey.
Sometimes there are new skills to be learned before you can actually get there. I’ve always known that this work is what I really wanted to do. For many years I have read motivational books and ebooks. I have studied successful people and followed people like Tony Robbins, Bob Proctor and most importantly for me Jack Canfield.
I have enrolled in his courses and I attended his live events and I eventually co-authored a book with him. So you never know what is around the corner.
I have spent a lot of money on self-learning because it was important to me and that I wanted this knowledge to get out there into the world to create a positive awareness. So find what is important to you.
You also may want to sign up for a class or seminar in your field. Coaching may also be an option, you may want to hire a coach to keep you on that path to success, they’re a great accountability partner because you’re checking in with them and telling them all the actions you have taken in that week. Look at it as an investment in your future, you will reap those rewards with the knowledge that you have gained.
Remember, most of life is on-the-job training. Some of the most important things can only be learned in the process of doing them. By starting and doing something you will get feedback to see what is working and what isn’t. If you don’t start for fear of doing it wrong, poorly or badly, you obviously will not get any feedback and therefore you never get to learn and improve.
I’ll leave you today with a quote from Mary Kay Ash, the Founder, of Mary Kay Cosmetics, who once said:
“For every failure, there’s an alternative course of action. You just have to find it. When you come to a roadblock, take a detour”
