Episode 7  Divide Your Goals Into Small Actions

 

 

Hello and welcome to the show!  Last week we talked about setting goals.  Today we are going to talk about breaking down those goals into small pieces.  And the reason we do this is that when you set your biggest goals they may become overwhelming.  We will rarely see them as little steps or smaller tasks. So to reduce those overwhelming feelings what you need to do is to reduce your goals into chunks, smaller tasks, and steps to achieving your goals.  And by accomplishing them one at a time it is an easier way to physically and mentally deal with the day to day action steps and individual tasks that need to be done to get to where you want to be.

Now there are several ways you can work out the action steps that need to be taken to accomplish your particular goal.  One way might be to contact people that have already achieved what you want to do and ask them what steps they took to get there.  Another way might be to buy a book or a manual or maybe an online course that will assist with the process.

Another great way to do it is to go to the end and then look back. What I mean by that is that you close your eyes and visualise that it is now the future and you have already accomplished your vision.  The next step is to now look back and take note of what you had to do and the steps you had to take to get to where you are now. But work backward, what was the last action you took? And then what was it before that and so on until you get to the first action you had to start with.

Don’t be afraid to ask for guidance from those who can assist you, sometimes it will be free and sometimes you may have to pay for it.

Get used to asking;

“Can you tell me how to?”

“How did you do that?”

“What steps did you take?”

“Where did you learn that?”

“What do I have to do?”

“How much money will I need to start?” 

So start thinking about who could assist you, what new disciplines or habits you will need to create into your life.

MIND MAPPING

There is a valuable technique called Mind Mapping which I use and it is so powerful because you are getting all that information out of your head and into a written map on a page. And if you are anything like me, you like the visual because you can see everything all laid out in front of you so clearly.  It’s a way of creating a detailed to-do list to achieving your goal. It’s a great way to working out what information you need to gather, who you will need to talk to, all the different steps you will need to take, how much money is required, and it will have detailed deadlines you will need to meet to accomplish each and every goal.

When I began building this podcast I used this method to help me “break down” this very large task I might add, into small individual tasks I need to complete in order to produce the finished product and release it out into the Podcast universe.

It is so empowering and clear and easy to see what steps are required to get to the final product.  Its a little difficult to describe the mind map on this program but I’ll do my best.

First of all, you will have a centre circle that will have your goal written in the circle.

Secondly, you will have outside circles and lines going from the goal circle to the outside circles. These outside circles will be the major categories of tasks you will need to accomplish to achieve the greater goal.

And last but not least, you will draw spokes radiating outward from each outside circle and you will label each one.

So think about a big task that is coming up and you need to mind map it.

Put the task in the centre.

Next, put the categories of the tasks that need to be done.

Then put small tasks attached to each category to break it down.

Using my podcast as an example, I had “create a motivational podcast”, written in the middle circle.

Then I placed categories such as content, hosting, training, equipment, intro/outro, cost, website, and social media

Then, using the equipment category, for example, I wrote, “research best podcast equipment, contact podcasters to see what equipment they use and to find out what cost was involved.

So you see how it drills down and gets you to a place of making sure you get everything done.

It’s a great method to use.

Once you have done this, you now need to convert all the items into a to-do list of daily action items that need to be completed but make sure you add a completion date for each one and commit to it.  So put them in your calendar and do whatever it takes to stay on schedule and make sure you put them in order of most importance.

 

PLAN YOUR DAY THE NIGHT BEFORE

A way to stay committed to this is to plan your day the night before.  Many successful people will use this method to gain better control of their life and increase their productivity.  There are two reasons why this is such a powerful strategy for success.

No. 1 – By planning your day the night before, you will spend time visualising exactly how you want the day to progress.  So during your sleep, your subconscious mind will be thinking about it all night long, thinking of ways to resolve the problem or overcome any obstacle that gets in its way to get to your desired outcome. 

Now if we want to get into the newer theories of quantum physics, it will also send out waves of energy around the universe that will attract the right resources and people towards you to reach a specific goal.

The second reason is that creating a to-do list the night before will ensure that your day begins hitting the ground running,  everything is laid out, you know exactly what’s going to happen and what you are going to do and in what order you are going to do it.

Those five phone calls you have to make will already be there in front of you with the names and the phone numbers next to them as well as the supporting paperwork you need.  By midmorning, you would have already completed many tasks that other people are still trying to organise let alone complete them.  Those people are still trying to clear their desks, get a coffee, having a chat with their colleagues, basically, they are still getting ready for work.

So try it, it’s amazing how organised your life becomes when you get clarity the night before on how the day is going to go.
