Episode 2 – Clarify Your Life Purpose!
Hello and welcome, I’m so glad you’re here because it means that you have taken that step to uncover why you were put on this earth.
One of the things that I really believe is that we are all born with a life purpose.
One of the world’s leading authorities on the development f human potential and personal effectiveness: Brian Tracy, once said:
“Decide upon your major definite purpose in life, and then organise all your activities around it.”
Now next to taking responsibility for your life and the results you produce, clarifying your life purpose, is one of the most important and we are not going to build on what we learned last week.
Without your life’s purpose, it is very easy to get sidetracked on your life’s journey. It’s so easy to wander and drift in the wrong direction and accomplish very little. It puts you in a reactive state of mind without a clear direction instead of a proactive state of mind with a clear intention.
When you have a life purpose, everything in your life will seem to fall into place. When you are living with what I call “on purpose” you are loving what you do, doing the things that are most important to you, and doing what you are good at.
So when you are in that state of being on purpose the opportunities, people and resources will naturally gravitate towards you.
Clarifying and pursuing your life purpose will not only get you to your destination but it will also make your journey more enjoyable. Once you have made that commitment to your life purpose you are now free to use your natural talents, your abilities, your knowledge and resources to their highest and best use, for yourself, for those around you and for the world. Everything you do should be an expression of your purpose.
In my workshop trainings I guide my students through a life purpose meditation exercise, which is a guided visualisation. At the end of the meditation, an item is uncovered which represents their life purpose, something that symbolises their life purpose. Once this is done they are guided through a life purpose exercise worksheet, I’m a firm believer in putting your thoughts to paper.
Before I go into the life purpose exercise I want to tell you about your inner guidance system. You are actually born with an inner guidance that tells you when you are on and when you are off purpose by the amount of joy that you are experiencing. Remember, the things that bring you the greatest joy in your life are the things that are in alignment with your purpose.
So to really get deep in thought about this I want you to write down the times in your life that you have felt the most joyful and alive. Look at what the common themes are of these experiences. Do you think you can find a way to make a living doing these things? There are successful people out there that figured out what brought them joy and make them alive. Following that, they organised their life around figuring out how to make a living it! And I know that you can too!
THE FOUR STEP PROCESS
With the “life purpose” exercise, there is a four-step process.
The first is to list two of your unique personal qualities such as enthusiasm and creativity.
The second step is to list one or two ways that you enjoy expressing the previous qualities when you interact with others, such as support and inspire.
In the third step, assume the world is absolutely perfect in this moment. Now close your eyes and visualise your perfect world. What does it look like? What does it feel like? How is everyone acting around you? Now you write your statement of how this perfect world is, as you see and feel it, write it in an uplifting way.
An example might be: “Everyone is communicating in a positive way and expressing freely. The world is a happier place and there is love all around.”
The fourth step is to put all the three previous steps into a single statement.
An example might be: To raise my children to be healthy and self-sufficient and to teach them to make a difference in the world.
To inspire people to uncover the belief in themselves and utilise their core genius.
Here’s an example of what someone wrote:
“To create a world in which people are living ecologically sustainable, spiritually fulfilling, and socially just lives.”
I thought that was a really good one.
Allow what you really love to emerge.
Maybe you just want to live in a cabin in the country and write poetry, or be a mechanic and work on cars or to create a non-profit organisation. That’s great!
Don’t discount what you have come up within search of what you think is a more noble purpose, we’re not all meant to be Mother Teresa.
I believe that in a perfect world people do not do things that would intentionally hurt other people just to pursue their own greedy self-interests. They would consider the impact of their actions on the rest of the world, both in terms of the people around them, animals, nature and the environment.
Don’t ask what the world needs, ask what makes you come alive, then go do it! Because what the world needs is people who have come alive and are loving what they do!
Remember, you are you, you are unique, with talents and desires that you have. Imagine a world where everyone embraced and expressed themselves authentically at their very core, the world would be a much happier place to live.
Now for some people the understanding of their life purpose will emerge quickly and effortlessly, however, for others, it may sometime. They may have to do some different exercises and meditations for that clarity to appear and a deeper self-reflection to uncover what brings them the greatest joy in life to feel totally clear about the purpose.
If you are having difficulty with this exercise ask your friends and family that are close to you, about what they think your unique qualities, talents and abilities are They will often tell you very quickly what great words there are to describe you. Sometimes what happens is that our biggest strengths and abilities, the things that we are most passionate about, come to us so naturally that we tend to overlook undervalue their uniqueness.
What you will discover is that when you discover your life purpose and you align your goals and activities with it, your life will flow almost effortlessly. Opportunities will appear, resources and relationships will emerge much more easily. Following that a series of small successes will slowly increase, slowly building on one another, until you create unstoppable momentum.
WHAT IS YOUR “WHY”?
Now we haven’t talked about goals yet, you’ll have to wait for episode 6 for that, but anyway, the reason is that clarifying your purpose comes before setting goals and organising your action plans, because your purpose is your “WHY” it’s the reason you create the goals you create and pursue the activities you do, it is the deeper reason that inspires you to strive to achieve the results you want. That’s why once you know your “WHY” it is much easier to stay motivated and keep taking action and break through any obstacles or resistance which you may be confronted with.
You now organise all your actions around it, everything you do should be an expression of your purpose.
Without the purpose there to guide you, your goals and action plans may not fulfill you.
And this is important – You don’t want to get to the top of the ladder only to realise that you have been leaning against the wrong wall.
Awareness without risk-taking yields nothing. So take action.
I believe we are all unlimited in our capacity in our consciousness for impact. We have unlimited possibilities to become pretty much anything we want because I believe you’re not given a dream unless you are have the capacity to fulfill it. You won’t be allowed to have it. Now you may need to learn new things, get mentored, develop more skills or team up with successful people in that industry but you actually have the capacity to do anything you dream about.
After completing this exercise and you have uncovered your life purpose, congratulations that’s great! What I want you to do now is read it every day, preferably in the morning. If you are a very creative person such as a painter or love visual images, maybe paint a symbol of your purpose or buy a print that represents your thoughts and hang it in a prominent location such as near your bed or on the door in your office.
Somewhere where you will see it every day.
This will assist you in staying focussed and keep it in the forefront of your mind. Another way you can do this is to set aside some time for quiet reflection using meditation and get into a deep state of self-love and peacefulness and in that state ask yourself “what is my purpose for living?” Or “What is my role in this universe?” Allow the words to just come to you. They don’t have to be poetic or anything but what is most important is how they make you feel.
In my workshops, there are more exercises and activities that we do to go more in-depth and obviously have more time to reflect, but for time constraints of this podcast I hope I have provided you with enough information to at least get you started on getting more clarity on what it is that you really want and making it your purpose in life.
